The Notes on a Glockenspiel

I slowly putting together some copy write free sheet music suitable for the glockenspiel, which I shall eventually put together as a free downloadable PDF. So please make sure you return to this page for updates. To start you off, I have a picture of a standard 25 note chromatic glockenspiel, which is standard in most schools and homes. This is instrument I shall be using to put together the sheet music. Right click to download the pictures and enjoy.

The Flowers of Lapland from Clockwork

I read this book with my class and got some really great results from their writing. For a music lesson I took the tune from the book and had the whole class playing it as an orchestra on percussion, boomwhackers, glockenspiels and keyboards. I was lucky enough to have a chance play it on a double manual harpsichord.

The Kaptain Uke Activity Book free to download

Fantastic news, The Kaptain Uke Activity Book is now available for free download.  I have started giving these away at events and you are more than welcome to use them yourselves.  Most modern photocopiers can print these out as A5 booklets.  Even home printers.  There are usually instructions that come up on the screen on when to put the paper back in to make sure it copies double-sided correctly.  Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader and select the booklet option.

Keep coming back to see if I’ve added more pages to the book.  This one has 8 pages so only needs two sheets of paper.  I have made all the pages black and white so you can colour everything in as well as do the puzzles.

Songs inspired by children’s books

I once had to put together a list of child-friendly songs inspired by children’s books or books studied by children (ie Romeo and Juliet).

China in Your Hand (Frankenstein) – T’pau
Return to Pooh Corner – Kenny Loggins
Rainbow Connection (Wizard of Oz) – Kermit the Frog

Neil Armstrong song (to the tune of She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain

I wrote this song because I could not find a song about the great American, Neil Alden Armstrong that children could sing to help them remember facts about him. I have included the lyrics and have no problem with school or anyone in education using this for a performance or assembly. If you do use it please remember to ask permission from the parents if you film it and put it on social media. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Cleaning Recorders

When I became Music subject leader in my school, the first thing I added to my yearly action plan was to use the neglected school recorders.  This meant cleaning them.  The first thing I did was give them a bit of a scrub with a clean washing up brush to get the gunk in the ridges off.  Then I soaked them in hot water for an hour to soften any extra gunk in the holes and inside.  Finally, I put them in the dishwasher.  This was very satisfying as the recorders fitted perfectly on the spokes.  I put them on a normal cycle and they came out as good as new.  When I put them back together I used vaseline (the petroleum jelly variety) to fit them back together as they were quite tight and rigid otherwise.  Finally, when I brought them back to school I made sure I had a pack of alcohol-free wipes so the children could clean the recorders after use.  I made sure the children were shown how to do this as it saved me disinfecting them and it also gave the children ownership of their music lessons.  I also notice one of two of them were badly chewed so I threw those away.

Recorders in a dishwater cleans them up a treat.
